Integrated Systems Testing (IST) – CAN/ULC S1001

At Pontentia Engineering Services Ltd., we provide Integrated Systems Testing (IST) to ensure your fire protection and life safety systems work together seamlessly and comply with CAN/ULC-S1001.

Our team manages the entire process- from preparing the IST plan to conducting tests and delivering final documentation- helping you achieve compliance, secure occupancy permits, and ensure your building is safe.

Why it matters

  • Required by Code: Referenced in the National Building Code (NBC), National Fire Code (NFC), and Ontario Building Code

  • Life Safety: Confirms all systems coordinate properly in an emergency

  • Necessary for Building Occupancy: Streamlines approval by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)

Systems we test

  • Fire alarm & sprinklers

  • Fire pumps & water supply

  • Emergency generators

  • Door hold-open devices

  • Elevators

  • Signal transmission & notification systems

When to Start IST

The IST process should be considered at the start of a project. Early planning with owners, contractors, and consultants ensures:

  • Clear roles (including the Integrated Testing Coordinator)

  • Proper system design and integration

  • No delays at occupancy

The IST Process (Simplified)

  1. Owner requests IST

  2. IST plan prepared and approved by AHJ

  3. Systems installed & verified

  4. Integrated testing conducted and documented

  5. Final report submitted → occupancy granted

Integrated Testing Coordinator (ITC)

The ITC is responsible for planning and overseeing the entire IST. Requirements vary by AHJ, but may include:

  • Experience-based qualification

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license

  • UL certification (with service through a certified provider)

Bottom line: IST isn’t just a box to check- it’s required for compliance and essential for ensuring your building is safe and ready to occupy. Contact us today to book your IST.
